City May Charge Vacant Downtown Building Owners

The city of Aberdeen is looking at a proposal to charge owners for vacant buildings downtown.

The city of Aberdeen is looking at a proposal to charge owners for vacant buildings downtown. A proposal by the Community Development director at this week’s council meeting could require building owners to notify the city if their building goes vacant and to pay an annual registration fee for as long as the property is empty. Under the plan, the registration fee would start at $100 and would go up every year the building is vacant. There would also be a $100 per month fee for the city to do an inspection of the building for any safety or health hazards. There’s no date yet to vote on any permanent changes.
