The Washington State Republicans is objecting to the state's efforts to track down and refute viral election misinformation online. The state GOP has filed a complaint with the state Executive Ethics Board against Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs, accusing him of violating the constitution and suppressing free speech. Hobbs hired an artificial intelligence company in May to comb public social media posts for dangerously false "narratives and threats" regarding Washington state elections. The company then alerts the secretary's office to the misinformation so Hobbs can decide whether or not to issue a press release correcting the false claims. The program will run through the 2024 election cycle.
