Tsunami Safety Structure Put Up In Tokeland

The Tsunami evacuation tower is the first free standing tower in the U.S.

A first of its kind Tsunami safety structure has been put up in Tokeland.  The Tsunami evacuation tower is the first free standing tower in the U.S.  The tower has pilons that go 50 feet into the ground, and the tower stands another 50 feet tall.  It can hold 400 people and residents can walk to it in 15-20 minutes. Data maps show if an earthquake happens, the first tsunami wave would take 35 minutes to hit the coast.  The tower was built by the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe, using a combination of FEMA money and internal funds.
